From FTZ to the Heart of Africa: Alumnus Mathias D’Haen to Share Field Experience in Conservation

The Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, will welcome a special guest on Thursday, March 19, 2026. Mathias D’Haen, an FTZ alumnus, will return to share his professional experience in wildlife conservation and protected area management across Central Africa.

Mathias began his career during his studies at CZU Prague, where he conducted research on the Kordofan giraffe in Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This experience laid the foundation for his future career and opened the door to work across multiple protected areas in Africa.

He later spent nine years working with African Parks, an organization managing more than 20 protected areas across the continent. During this time, he worked in countries such as the Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Chad, Benin, and South Sudan, contributing to biodiversity conservation and protected area management in challenging environments.

In his lecture, Mathias will not only share insights from fieldwork but also highlight the role of modern technologies in conservation. He will introduce tools such as EarthRanger, a platform that enables real-time monitoring and more effective management of protected areas.

The seminar will offer a unique perspective on how studies at FTZ can lead to impactful international careers and contribute to global conservation efforts.

When: Thursday, March 19, 2026, 14:00–15:30 Where: FTZ CZU Prague, room 116

Please note that the lecture will be held in person only.
