We are pleased to invite you to attend the dissertation thesis defence of Abdoul Razack Moussa Zabeirou with the title “Dama gazelle population structure, distribution and interactions in socio-ecological system of the Takolokouzet massif, Air Ténéré National Nature Reserve, Niger” (Department of Wildlife and Animal Sciences, Tropical Agrobiology and Bioresources Management). Thesis defence will take place on 24th March 2026, 10:00 a.m., meeting room 313 (building FTZ).
The dama gazelle (Nanger dama) is one of the most endangered antelope species in the world and a flagship species of Saharan and Sahelian ecosystems. This research investigates the demographic structure, spatial distribution and socio-ecological interactions of the remaining dama gazelle population in the Takolokouzet Massif, within the Air and Ténéré Natural Nature Reserve in Niger. Based on long-term field observations, camera-trap monitoring and a socio-economic survey conducted between 2017 and 2024, the study analyses the demographic structure, habitat use and social organisation of the species in one of its last strongholds. The research also explores interactions between wild and domestic ungulates, pastoral communities and conservation practices in this remote desert landscape. The results provide new insights into the ecology of the dama gazelle and contribute to the development of evidence-based conservation strategies aimed at improving the long-term survival of this critically endangered species in the Sahara.
We warmly invite faculty members, students, and the public to join this defence.
