We invite you to attend the dissertation thesis defence of Ing. Musa Bappah with the title “Assessment of agri residual biomass for energy utilization (A case study of Nigeria)” (Department of Sustainable Technologies, Sustainable Rural Development). Thesis defence will take place on 25th September 2025, 10:30 a.m., meeting room 313 (building FTZ).
Industrialization and global population growth are driving a steadily increasing demand for energy. In many developing countries, fossil fuels and firewood remain the dominant energy sources, yet their use contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and other forms of environmental degradation. In Nigeria, for instance, a large proportion of households rely on firewood as their primary cooking fuel, creating both ecological and health challenges. This study explores the potential of converting common Nigerian agricultural residues such as corn cobs, peanut shells, and rice husks into sustainable solid biofuels. These residues, which are often discarded or openly burned on farms, represent an underutilized source of energy. The research focuses on assessing household energy consumption patterns, evaluating the physicochemical properties of the biomass in comparison with ISO standards, and testing the mechanical and combustion performance of the resulting biofuels. We warmly invite faculty members, students, and the public to join this defence.
