Camelids are important in rural farmers' livelihoods and contribute to local areas' economic and food security. Jana's dissertation focused on camelid husbandry and breeding practices in the tropics and subtropics. It characterizes the husbandry practices of farmers raising domestic South American camelids in the Andean region. It also observed interesting information about alpacas' maternal and nursing behaviour under traditional conditions in the Andes and on farms in Central Europe. Additionally, it documented the occurrence of allonursing in alpacas.
