The Laboratory for biological materials analysis focuses on the study of biological materials using simple and economically feasible techniques, focusing on their applicability in tropical regions of the developing world. Our research priority is to provide students with an interdisciplinary education for subsequent cooperation with the national reference laboratories carrying out the analysis of biological materials, certifying and testing various substances. Students are educated in biochemical, parasitological and haematological good laboratory practice (GLP). Besides theoretical training, emphasis is placed on the practical testing of new analytical methods and so called “kits” suitable for use in field practice under tropical conditions.
The laboratory is equipped to carry out experiments with thev biochemical analyzer IDEXX VetTest to perform biochemical blood tests of various animal species. Blood samples are tested immediately, thus minimizing the risk of observational artifacts, caused by storage and transport. "Dry-slide" technology provides accurate results through the examinationof small amounts of blood within 20 minutes, which minimizes the effects of substances that can interferewith the results. It can inspect up to 26 different biochemical parameters.
In the lab a Nikon Eclipse E 200 research microscope intended for the observation of microscopic objects in a bright field is used along with a number of conventional light microscopes, such as the Nikon Eclipse E 100, to identify the different developmental stages of parasitic agents in animals and humans. Also available are portable microscopes capable of recording an image using a USB camera connected to a PC, which are intended for individual studies within the field of parasitology. It is possible to model different situations in the collection of samples, and in processing and diagnostic procedures, and compare the effect of these different processing techniques on the quality and interpretation of results. The lab includes balances, centrifuges, refrigerators and freezers.
