A new Loska Eco-Centre was developed at the research station of the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, located in Lány. The centre connects research, education, and direct experience with nature.
The site is unique thanks to its breeding of eland antelope (Tragelaphus oryx) and guanaco (Lama guanicoe). These species offer a valuable opportunity to understand the ecological role of large herbivores and their impact on vegetation, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning.
With newly developed infrastructure – including an elevated observation platform and a teaching classroom – the station is gradually transforming into a modern eco-centre for education, outreach, and science communication.
Learning through experience
The Loska Eco-Centre is built on experiential and field-based learning. Participants do not only learn about nature – they learn in nature. They observe animals, explore the landscape, and reflect on human impacts on the environment.
Educational programmes are designed for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as well as the general public. They focus on key aspects of environmental education, including human–nature relationships, understanding ecological processes, and responsible decision-making.
From experience to understanding
The programmes combine direct experience with scientific interpretation. Participants gain insight into animal care, behaviour, and needs, while also engaging with broader topics such as animal welfare, ethics of animal management, and sustainable landscape practices.
In this way, the eco-centre fosters not only knowledge but also critical thinking about the role of humans in nature.
Part of the FTZ mission
The establishment of the Loska Eco-Centre builds on the Faculty’s long-term focus on sustainable agriculture, nature conservation, and the integration of research and practice.
It represents another step in opening science to the public and contributing to a deeper understanding of today’s environmental challenges.
