The Study Environment at the FTA/CZU

Living on the campus of CZU offers a rich student life and a wide range of benefits. The University is the only one in Prague, and one of the few in the Czech Republic, which has its own campus comprising of most faculties, lecture and research halls, experimental centres, sports facilities (a swimming pool, soccer field, tennis courts, beach volleyball court, gym, sauna, whirlpool, solariu ...), a vast complex of student dormitories, three restaurants, two clubs and a few stores. The university also has its own mini-brewery (the beer brand Suchdol Jeník is available on campus) and vineyard located near Prague. A well-maintained park surrounding the campus gives a pleasant and tranquil atmosphere to the place.

The music festival Miss Agro takes place annually on the campus of CZU. Thousands of spectators and listeners gather there to see the most beautiful and most charming girls of the University and to enjoy the following open-air concert.

Student Association at the FTA

FTA also supports the activities of student associations. Some of them (e.g. the association BeFair) are focused on the relationship between the global South and North, Fair Trade and a responsible approach to consumption. Others are involved in activities directly in developing countries (e.g. an association aiming to protect biodiversity and to save antelopes in Africa - Derbianus Conservation or the Czech Association for Agroforestry).

Furthermore, thanks to the activities of student associations and their active involvement in the life of the faculty, the FTA became the second fair trade faculty in the Czech Republic under the campaign for socially responsible public institutions.

Further Activities of FTA Students

Throughout the year, the faculty arranges a series of seminars and workshops, hosted by Czech and other international experts in rural and agricultural development. In addition, the FTA organizes scientific conferences where students have the opportunity to present their research (e.g. The Tropentag Conference which is held every four years at the FTA / CZU anf the Tropical Biodiversity Conservation Conference TBCC).

Every summer the FTA arranges 3 to 5 summer schools throughout the world, which are attended by students from both the FTA and students from partner universities in their respective countries. Examples of summer schools as follows:

"Cooperatives and Institutions for Rural Development" in Georgia
"From Net to Spoon" in Cambodia
"Livelihood strategies and the development of small livestock herders in Mongolia" in Mongolia
"Support SAUM to reach a better position in EHEA (European Higher Education Area)" in Moldova.

Scientific and Research Facilities at the FTA

The new building of the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences was built in 2014 and is thus among the most modern and best-equipped buildings at the university.

The scientific and research activities of our students take place in seven laboratories:

The Laboratory of Ethnobotany and Ethnopharmacology, specially equipped for basic chemical and biochemical analysis in the field of organic chemistry and biology. The laboratory equipment is suitable for basic experimental work in the analysis of biologically active substances.
The Laboratory of Plant Tissue Cultures, specially equipped for work with in vitro cultures.
The Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, which specializes in the detection of population structure, the monitoring of hybridization and the phylogenetic analysis of selected species.
The Laboratory of Biofuels, which focuses on the production and measurement of the physical and mechanical properties of solid biofuels.
The Laboratory of Environmental Technologies focuses on the monitoring of harmful gases in agriculture.
The Laboratory of Technology and Food Processing, which specializes in the study of technological procedures in food processing with a focus on their applicability in tropical regions of the developing world.
The Laboratory of Biological Materials Analyses.

The FTA further has its own Botanical Garden, which focuses on the cultivation of tropical and subtropical crops in tropical and subtropical glasshouses. The Botanical Garden also contains two experimental greenhouses for plant collections and their multiplication.
