Wildlife Management in Tropics and Subtropics (WLM) is a two-year M.Sc. programme taught in English. The study programme provides to students the higher education on the MSc. level and it put forward the possibilities for sustainable use of wildlife in accordance with the principles of species and habitat conservation. The students gain the profound knowledge and practical skills in a field of breeding of non-domesticated animals and utilization of wildlife respecting its environment, biology, ecology and behaviour. Students get practical background in direct use of wildlife, from the breeding management, animal capture and handling, prevention of diseases, up to meat production and processing of traditional food like biltong. Indirect use of wildlife in terms of recreation and ecotouristic activities is also covered. Management of wildlife populations for both production and conservation purposes is supported by advanced molecular techniques performed in our laboratory. The graduates are ready for professional work in sustainable agriculture and in management of protected areas and also in facilities focusing on breeding of both domesticated and wild animals like zoological gardens, game ranches, and other animal breeding facilities.
Very important part of courses represents practical trainings and field works and also the Scientific Seminary where students get the opportunity to present their own work and improve their communication skills dealing with their diploma thesis. Faculty provides many possibilities to gain hands-on experience and practical skills through its projects around the world. Students are highly encouraged to develop their master's thesis in conjunction with one of these development projects or with a local institution, such as a veterinary lab, the Faculty's unique farm focused on antelope production and zoological gardens. The studies are terminated by State exam and defence of the Master's thesis. Students graduate with the title „Inženýr“ - Ing. (M.Sc. equivalent).
