The Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences at CZU Prague offers an educational programme for schools, Tropical and Subtropical Treasures: A Journey Towards Sustainability and the Protection of Natural Resources. The interactive programme introduces pupils to the fascinating world of useful tropical and subtropical plants and explores their importance, uses and connection to nature conservation and sustainable agriculture.
Discover plants with all your senses
The programme takes place in the tropical and subtropical greenhouse of the FTZ Botanical Garden, where pupils will discover both familiar and less well-known plants, including banana plants, vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, citrus fruits and babaco.
The programme encourages pupils to explore plants using all their senses. They can smell spices, touch different parts of plants and, depending on what is available in the greenhouses at the time, taste some of the fruits. They will learn which parts of plants people use, where some of the food we consume every day comes from and why it is important to grow crops in ways that are kinder to nature.
The programme also introduces pupils to topics such as Fairtrade and sustainable agriculture and encourages them to think about how our everyday choices are connected to the protection of natural resources and the environment.
At the end of the programme, pupils can consolidate what they have learned through specially prepared worksheets that encourage independent thinking and help them connect new knowledge with their everyday lives.
