International Development and Agricultural Economics (IDAE) is a two-year master's study programme taught in English.
This interdisciplinary master's programme provides a great opportunity for students to understand the role of economic theories in agricultural production systems, agri-food chains, development strategies, climate change initiatives and policies, particularly in tropical and less developed regions. The programme consists of three major components. First, core theoretical courses that address institutional and behavioural theories, agrarian policies, development and poverty alleviation strategies, farming systems economics, principles of cooperatives and collective action, tropical agriculture, and marketing of tropical products. Second, students select various courses to study that fit their main motivations or are well suited to the master's thesis topic. Third, a compilation of the master's thesis reflecting the scope of the programme.
Master's thesis plays a crucial role in the programme. Therefore, students attend four specifically tailored scientific seminars, which provide students with the main principles of research in the field of agricultural economics, increase their capacities to develop a high-quality research proposal, and to defend their own findings in front of their classmates, academic staff, and invited experts thanks to improved communication and presentation skills. Students choose a topic during the first semester and become a part of a supervisor's research team established at the faculty. Working in these teams gives the students hands-on experience and practical skills by participating in various research and innovation projects managed by their supervisor. Students also undergo practical and research training, usually in cooperation with a partner institution as an internship and/or by participating in international conferences.
The studies are terminated by the State exam and the defence of the master's thesis. Students graduate with the title "Inženýr "- Ing.
