Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences (FTZ) alumnus Raksmey Phoeurk is demonstrating how education, international collaboration, and research can contribute to addressing real-world challenges. A graduate of the International Development and Agricultural Economics (IDAE) master's programme in 2017, Raksmey is currently pursuing a joint Ph.D. at the Royal University of Agriculture (Cambodia) and the University of Liege – Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (Belgium).
His doctoral research focuses on consumer behaviour and the smoked fish market in Cambodia, combining agricultural economics, food safety, and rural development. Smoked fish is one of Cambodia's most important traditional food products and a vital source of income for many local communities. Through his research, Raksmey aims to improve product quality and safety while supporting local producers in adopting innovative processing practices and strengthening their market opportunities.
"My goal is not only to improve food quality and safety but also to help local producers increase their incomes by making their products more competitive and valuable to consumers," Raksmey explains.
Building on the Foundations Gained at FTZ
Raksmey credits his studies at FTZ with providing the knowledge and skills that continue to support his research career today. Courses in agricultural economics, project management, research methodology, statistics, and econometrics equipped him with the tools needed to design, manage, and analyse complex research projects.
Beyond academics, he remembers the international atmosphere of the Prague campus, where students from around the world learned from one another through cultural events, field trips, and everyday interactions.
Returning to His Alma Mater
Raksmey recently returned to FTZ as part of a staff mobility exchange between the Royal University of Agriculture and the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences. During his visit, he delivered lectures on consumer behaviour, exchanged research experience with colleagues, and discussed future cooperation in research methodology, consumer surveys, and farming systems.
The long-standing partnership between the two institutions continues to grow through collaborative research, academic exchanges, and educational activities coordinated with Ing. Petra Chaloupková, Ph.D., dr. h. c., with whom Raksmey has worked since his time as a master's student.
Research with Lasting Impact
Alongside his Ph.D., Raksmey serves as the Director of the Center of Excellence on Agricultural Economics and Rural Development at the Royal University of Agriculture. After completing his doctorate, he plans to continue combining research, teaching, and project management to support sustainable agricultural and rural development in Cambodia.
Looking back on his time at FTZ, Raksmey encourages future students to take advantage of international study opportunities and scholarship programmes.
