Duration of the Project: 2020

Aims of the project:

The aim of the project is to increase the resilience of the inhabitants of the Shabelle zone to the transmission of Covid-19 disease and to the side effects of the Covid-19 epidemic through increased capacity of the local health infrastructure and improved access to water, sanitation and food. The project has two specific objectives. The first specific objective is to achieve the project's aim by increasing the capacity of health infrastructures and increasing access to water and sanitation. The second specific objective is to achieve the project's aim by increasing access to food by controlling the spread of desert grasshoppers.

The target group is 90,000 inhabitants of Shabelle, Somalia region, namely cities of Gode and Adadle.

The first output of the project is the increased capacity of the health infrastructure in Gode in the field of prevention of the spread of Covid-19 disease, which will be achieved mainly by training local health workers, distributing disinfectant and personal protective equipment and improving the management of medical waste. The development and import of the laboratory from the Czech Republic will also contribute to this output. This laboratory is compiled by experts from ČZU from laboratory components of Czech companies. The laboratory is mobile and therefore it is possible to transport it and operate with it in remote rural areas where medical care is otherwise limited.

The supply of drinking water in tanks for the Isolated Care Centre for Patients with Covid-19 and the Quarantine Centre for People with Covid-19, as well as the purchase and distribution of water purification tablets, will contribute to better access to water in communities at risk of Covid-19.

Another outcome of the project is to improve the prevention of Covid-19 disease transmission through improved hygiene and sanitation in communities most at risk of covid-19 infection. The construction of latrines, distribution of sanitation products and training and a campaign on hygiene and prevention of covid-19 disease transmission will contribute to this outcome.

The final output of the project is to increase the resilience of the most vulnerable inhabitants of the Shabelle zone to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic by increasing access to food by controlling the spread of desert grasshoppers. This output will be achieved by training local agricultural agents to control the overproduction of desert grasshoppers, purchase and distribution of insecticides and cereal seeds.
