Dr. Anna Bernátková

A graduate of the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences (FTZ), Ing. Anna Bernátková, Ph.D., is dedicated to the conservation of endangered animal species and to researching their behavior in the wild. Through her experience both in the field and in academia, she inspires our current students. We truly appreciate her ongoing cooperation with our faculty.

In this interview, Dr. Anna Bernátková shares her journey from studying at the FTZ to working as a research scientist at Prague Zoo. Discover how her studies at FTZ supported her career, what she finds most fulfilling about her current work, and which experiences she considers most valuable for today’s students.

  • Can you briefly describe your work? I work as a researcher at Prague Zoo, focusing mainly on research of the behaviour of endangered animal species in their natural habitats (Mongolia, Kazakhstan).
  • How did you get your job? Thanks to my long-term interest in wildlife and nature conservation, which deepened during my studies. My experience from international internships, field research, and PhD studies led me to my current position. I had been collaborating with Prague Zoo already during my doctoral research.
  • What is the most interesting part of your work? I am inspired by the opportunity to directly contribute to the conservation of endangered species and to see tangible results in practice. The most interesting aspect is the connection between science, conservation, and public education.
  • How did your studies at FTZ help you in your career? My studies provided me with a strong theoretical background, international experience, and valuable contacts. Field research during my studies was crucial for my professional development.
  • What are your future plans? I plan to continue my research and conservation work focused on endangered species, to participate in projects connecting science and practical conservation, and to share my experience with students and the public.
  • Why did you decide to study at our faculty? I chose the FTZ for its unique combination of an international environment, focus on tropical ecosystems, and the opportunity to link theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
  • What was your specialization? Tropical Agrobiology and Bioresource Management
  • What did you enjoy most about your studies? The opportunity to participate in international projects and internships, gain hands-on field experience, and be part of an inspiring academic community.
  • Who influenced you the most? (Your favorite teacher / favorite subject) My supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Francisco Ceacero, had the greatest influence on me and we maintain our cooperation.
  • What would you recommend to FTZ students? Take advantage of various opportunities, make the most of international internships and field projects, build your professional network, and don’t be afraid to combine your studies with real-world experience.
